In a historic moment at La Defense Arena, the United States secured their 3,000th Olympic medal as Regan Smith and Katharine Berkoff clinched silver and bronze in the women's 100m backstroke. This achievement solidifies the U.S.'s dominance in the Olympics, with no other country coming close to half of their tally.
Despite this milestone, the Americans have faced challenges in claiming gold medals in Paris. While they have amassed an impressive 15 medals overall, they have only secured two golds, trailing behind five other countries for now.
Australia, in particular, has excelled in the pool with four gold medals, overshadowing the American performances. The American men's 4x200m freestyle relay team and Bobby Finke in the men's 800m freestyle final settled for silver, falling short of their goal of gold.
Reflecting on their performance, relay swimmer Drew Kibler stated, "I think we're always shooting for gold, that's the American standard. It is a really special thing to be on that podium and it was really tough a few years ago missing that podium. So it's a step forward, but we're always shooting for gold."
In a touching tribute to her father, Katharine Berkoff followed in her father David Berkoff's footsteps, who won the men's 100 metres backstroke 32 years ago today at the Barcelona Games. With her victory, she contributed to the U.S.'s 600th swimming medal.
When asked about her father's influence, Berkoff shared, "He's been very supportive, just trying to remind me to stay in my own lane, remember why I'm doing what I'm doing and just do it for myself and no one else."
Australia's Kaylee McKeown successfully defended her backstroke crown, while Americans Smith and Berkoff joined her on the podium.
Smith expressed her admiration for McKeown's performance, stating, "I think other people's performances are completely out of my control and Kaylee is one of one. She is an absolutely incredible racer and she knows what to do when it matters. I'm really proud of myself... I stayed in my own lane, I executed my race plan and I left it all in the pool."
