BENGALURU (Reuters) - Indian authorities are gearing up for a detailed forensic investigation into the origins of a fire that broke out on Saturday at a Tata Electronics factory responsible for manufacturing components for Apple (NASDAQ:) iPhones, as confirmed by a Tamil Nadu state official on Sunday.
The factory, which was on a weekly holiday on Sunday, is unlikely to receive clearance from the state to resume operations by Monday, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Both Tata Electronics and Apple have yet to respond to inquiries made outside of regular business hours. Tata Electronics had previously stated that it was looking into the cause of the incident and would take necessary measures to protect its employees and stakeholders.
This incident is the latest in a series of setbacks for Apple suppliers in India, where the tech giant is expanding its supply chain beyond China and views as a key growth market.
The fire at the Hosur plant started in a chemical storage area, as reported by a fire official to Reuters.
District administrative official K.M. Sarayu stated that the fire has been fully extinguished and emissions have ceased.
Two workers who were hospitalized are expected to be released on Sunday, Sarayu confirmed.
"We can now proceed with the investigation," Sarayu added, mentioning that a forensic team from the state capital of Chennai has been dispatched.
It remains unclear whether the fire had any impact on neighboring structures, one of which is slated to commence iPhone assembly operations by the end of the year.
Analysis and Impact:
The fire at the Tata Electronics factory in India could have significant implications for Apple's supply chain and stock price. Any disruption in the production of iPhone components could lead to delays in product launches and impact Apple's revenue projections. Investors will closely monitor how Apple responds to this incident and whether it will affect its plans to diversify its supply chain in India. Additionally, this highlights the importance of risk management and contingency planning for companies operating in global markets.
